Whale and moon on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A humpback-style whale with a ribbed belly and long pectoral fin swims towards a large full moon, which is shaded with dense stippling to suggest craters and surface texture. The whale is built from fine outlines and dotwork shading, and the moon is filled with dots that fade towards its edges. The tattoo is shown in black and grey on a pale forearm against a patterned bird print skirt.

The herring boats had been out since dusk, and Ada Pell still hadn't come in. Her father stood on the harbour wall with a lantern he kept lifting and lowering, as if the light might be something she could read from the water. The men said the sea was flat enough to walk on. The women said nothing, because they had all seen the whale come into the bay the week before, rolling slow past the breakwater with its long white fins folded like a priest's hands.

Ada had been the one who went out to meet it. She rowed the little punt alone past the lobster pots, because the whale had come aground on the sandbar with a tangle of net wound round its tail, and nobody else would go near. She cut it free with her mother's bread knife. The whale did not thrash. It lay still and looked at her with one eye the size of a dinner plate, then turned and went out past the point, and she had thought that was the end of it.
Now the moon came up over the headland, huge and pocked like a bread crust, and beneath it the water broke. The whale rose beside the Mary Jane with the rest of the fleet trailing behind, and on its back sat Ada, dry as a stone, one hand resting on the ridge of its head as though she had always ridden there. Her father let the lantern fall. The boats came home in a line behind the whale, low in the water with silver, and the whale stayed out past the breakwater until the moon had shrunk to a coin in the morning sky.
