White ink elephant and mandala designs

Geometric · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A woman's upper body shows an ornate elephant motif on the chest, with mandala designs on the back of one hand and the palm of the other, plus a lace-like band at the neck. The fine linework is detailed, with dotted accents and patterned fills, and the shading is minimal and flat. The designs are in white ink or paint against the skin, with silver jewellery and a white lace top completing a sunlit composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the walled garden at Hollin Court, the old gardener Tobias Reed kept a white elephant that had come over the wall in the year of the great frost. It was not grey like the animals in the menagerie books but pale as chalk, and across its brow the petals of roses were cut so fine they looked like frost on glass.

Each morning the elephant walked the beds and pressed its trunk into the soil, and where it pressed, rings of dots opened in the earth overnight: round seed-heads, spirals of thyme, a wheel of marigolds like a small sun. Nell, Tobias's daughter, swept the paths after it and counted the dots, and she never once found two rings alike.

When the drought came in summer, the limes dropped their leaves and the well went dry. Tobias grew thin, and the village asked the squire to send the elephant away. That night Nell filled a pail from the elephant's trough, which had never run dry, and carried it to the orchard. Where she poured it, the roots drank and the blossom came back on the old pear trees.

The elephant stayed until Nell was grown. When at last it went back over the wall, it left a perfect ring of white dots in the lawn, and no one in the village has ever mown it away.
