White ink lace design on shoulder and upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A white ink tattoo covers the shoulder and upper arm, with radial mandala-like rosettes, scrolling curves and lace-like floral motifs. The linework is fine and even, and the pale ink shows clearly against the darker skin. The photograph is cropped to the arm and shoulder, with the face out of frame, and a hallway and door are visible behind.

The bell at Hollis Street had gone at six, and by half past the card was still pinned to Ada's board with a hole missing from the third rosette. She pressed her thumb to the pricks and counted outward the way her mother had taught her: eight spokes, then the scroll that climbed out of them like a fern unfurling in the wrong direction. Her mother would have swept the card into the fire without a word.

Nobody at the warehouse would have called it a mistake. The buyers from Calais wanted the old pattern exactly, every ring of picots evenly spaced, every curl turning at the same angle. Ada had spent a whole winter learning to see the design in the thread before she saw the thread itself. White cotton on a cream ground, so fine that the bobbins clicked like teeth when she worked them late.
She unpinned the card and laid it on the sill where the yard lamp fell across it. Then she took a fresh sheet, pricked the rosette again, and let the scroll run wide the way the mistake had wanted to run. Her hands ached. Outside, a carter swore at his horse and the cobbles rang under its hooves.
In the morning the clerk held the finished length to the window and turned it slowly, hunting for a fault. He found none. He asked why the curl ran towards the edge, and Ada told him the truth, which was that the pattern had always been meant to go that way and only the book had been wrong.
