White ink mandala and paisley forearm tattoo

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm is covered in a white ink tattoo of ornamental mandala and paisley motifs, with flower rosettes, swirls and scalloped borders. The fine linework is pale and raised against the skin, so the design shows mainly in the light. The arm rests on a white bedsheet with a grey sleeve at the bottom edge of the frame.

Dear Tomas,

The dye vats are still going at Kalami, though your uncle swears the water tastes of lime since the new well went in. I went down to the yard on Tuesday to fetch the last indigo lengths for the Saint Nikolas boat. Ioanna had hung them on the line to dry, and the sun was low enough to come through them sideways. You could see the paisley before you could see the blue: little teardrops with curls inside, pale as salt on a dark sea.

She showed me how she makes them. Lime paste, mixed thick as porridge, is pressed through carved blocks of pearwood. Wherever the paste touches the cloth, the indigo cannot take, so the pattern stays bare and white. The mandala blocks were her grandmother's, and the edges have worn so smooth that the rosettes come out soft, as if someone had breathed on them. She will not print a single length by lamplight. She says the design only knows where it belongs in daylight.

I thought of you when I saw it. You always wanted to be the one who knew what a thing was for before anyone told you. Come in August and hold a length up to the harbour wall yourself. Bring your sunhat. The white will not show in the shade.

Love, Aunt Eleni
