White ink scrollwork on a bare foot

Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot rests on a grey fabric with a floral pattern, and a flowing design of white ink scrolls and leaf-like foliage spreads across the top of the foot towards the ankle. The linework is smooth and open, with the white ink standing out against the skin tone. The composition is a close, straight-on view with soft, even lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Hollis wanted the acanthus to climb the cornice the way ivy climbs a churchyard wall, never quite in a straight line, so Tom Garrity spent three evenings on the scaffold with a lamp hooked to the board and his trowel working like a bird's beak. The lime putty was soft as cheese when he cut it. Every leaf had to be lifted clean before it set, and every curl had to turn back on itself the way a fern uncurls in May, or Dunmore would have it down with a mallet and a word.

Dunmore had taught him that a scroll should look accidental. "Nothing grows in a row, boy," he said, tapping a rose with his pipe stem. Tom had thought that was the whole secret until he saw the drawing room on the first floor, where the grey silk walls were printed with a faded flower pattern, leaves and tendrils in a paler thread. Mrs Hollis had brought the cloth from her mother's house in Frome and would not have it changed, so the ceiling was to answer it.

On the last night he laid the final leaf and climbed down to find her stretched on the chaise, one arm across her eyes, the lamp throwing a white net of plaster over her. He saw then that his pale scrolls ran over the silk's old leaves like frost over a window, and that where the two patterns met they could not be told apart. He had thought he was copying nothing. He had been copying her mother's silk all along.

"There," she said, not lifting her arm. "Now I can look up and find something I know."
