White ink paisley design on lower back

Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large paisley and mandala design covers the lower back and upper curve of the buttock, with the pattern made of fine lines, scrolls and small dots. The ink is a pale cream to white against tanned skin, so the design shows as a light, delicate outline and fill rather than dark ink. The subject is photographed close up against a plain blue background, with the design filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Mariam, the master has taken the cream paste away from me again. He says a boy who lets his dots wander will ruin a whole shawl, and the buyer from Lyon will not pay for wandering dots. So I sit by the window with the brass pen and practise on the back of old ledgers. Every teardrop must curl the same way, like a wave that has decided where it is going.

Yesterday I copied the large pattern from the old wooden block that hangs above the dye vats. Its carver has been dead for forty years, but his mandala is still perfect: a ring of petals, then a ring of small stars, then a ring of dots so fine you must hold your breath to count them. The master says the design was first drawn in the margin of a prayer book by a woman who had lost her husband to the river. I do not know if this is true. Everyone in this lane tells a story about a pattern.

This morning I finished the scroll at the narrow end of the teardrop. The paste dried pale as milk on the indigo cloth, and when the sun crossed the courtyard the whole shape glowed as though someone had lifted it out of the light itself. The master walked past, looked for a long time, and said nothing. Then he took the pen from my hand and set one dot of his own in the last petal, slightly off centre, where no one would notice but me.

I have decided it was his way of saying the work is mine now. Come home at the festival and I will show you before the paste is washed off. Your brother, Idris.
