White lace and star temporary tattoo sheet
Colour · Flash
A flat product photograph of a sheet of temporary tattoo designs printed in white on a pale blue backing. Five vertical strips show different lace borders, one of which has a row of small stars. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the white designs contrast softly against the blue background, which fills most of the frame.

Dearest Nell, the parcel from Hollis's warehouse came on Tuesday, and I have been fretting over it since. Forty sheets of transfers, pale blue paper with lace printed on it in white, as though someone had snipped a frost off the windowpane. Father would have called it foolishness. The Pardoe girls have already had stars along their wrists, and Mrs Pardoe's boy has a border round his ankle, which I did not give him leave for.

The trouble is the summer trade. Our guests come down from the cities wanting something to take home, and they do not want a shell or a bit of rock. They want to look as though they belonged to the sea for a week. I sold the first sheet for fourpence and the second for sixpence, and by Thursday there was a queue at the scullery door of ladies asking whether the stars would wash off in salt water. I told them it would hold a fortnight, which is the only true thing I know about it.
Last night, after the last of the dinners, I sat on the back step with the box open and cut out the longest strip, the one with the stars marching down it like lamps along the front. I pressed it onto my own forearm, the way we used to with the pictures from the Christmas crackers. The water was still warm from the kettle. When I lifted the backing away the lace came up clean and white, and the stars were so exact I could count them by the light from the upstairs window.
I am not sure what I expected. Only that the sea was out beyond the groyne, going on without us, and it seemed a fair thing to wear a border of something that would not last. I shall keep the last sheet back for you. Come down in August. The rooms are ready, and I will show you how it comes off with oil, slowly, so it does not tear.
