Metallic geometric band temporary tattoo sheet
Geometric · Mixed · Flash
A clear plastic package holds a sheet of temporary tattoo designs shown as narrow vertical bands. The bands include a crackle pattern, rows of small crosses, zigzag triangles and repeated cross-hatched diamonds. The designs are printed in black with gold and silver metallic foil on a white backing, and the card above shows a small thumbnail of an arm.

Marta had come up the lane with nothing to trade but a roll of gold leaf her late husband had bought off a chandler in Bristol, and the steward at Hollin Orchard would not give a single windfall for coin. It was the last week of August. The Pearmains hung so low their boughs were propped on forked poles, and the wasps had got into every drop of juice on the ground.

She unrolled the sheet across the gatepost. The steward ran his thumb over the zigzags, then the little crosses, then the diamonds laid one inside another like the lattice on a bee skep. The crackled piece he held up to the light for a long time. 'That is how ice looks on a pond before it goes,' he said. 'Cut me a length of each, and I will give you the lower orchard for a week.'
She cut them with her husband's shears, damped the backing with rinse water from her bucket and pressed the bands onto his forearm one after another, smoothing them with the flat of her hand until the gold sat in the lines like inlay. He counted the crosses under his breath. There were forty-one. The last he would not let her finish, because a pattern ought to leave a gap for the next season.
In the morning the bands had not lifted, though he had dunked his arm in the trough twice. Marta walked out among the trees and found every fruit grown since dawn carrying a small gold cross on its shoulder, and the zigzags running round the trunks like tinsel. The steward came down the row with his basket on his hip, lifted one apple to the sun, and the crackle ran across its skin like old glaze. 'Well,' he said. 'Now we will see who keeps the bargain.'
