The sheet of transfers you posted me arrived the morning the bus broke down outside Kestrel Wells, so I have had plenty of time to study them. Gold and silver chevrons, turquoise triangles stacked like the teeth of a saw, pink teardrops strung one under another like rain that never fell. I laid the strips along my forearm in the shade of the bus and the heat made them look almost like a real bangle. The driver said the road would be clear by four. It was not clear by four.

Mrs Okonkwo from the seat behind wanted to know where I'd got them, and I told her a man in Port Lowry sold them off a trestle table with a cigarette going. She bought three sets. By the time we reached the Halden junction every woman on the bus had a zigzag running up one wrist, the diamonds had gone onto ankles, and the rings had gone onto the backs of hands where the sun caught them. Nobody talked about the breakdown after that.

I have kept the sheet, though most of it is spent. What remains is the long turquoise band, the one that looks like a road seen from above. I put it on this morning before the heat came up, walked to the edge of the forecourt and watched the mirage fold the highway in half. Gold on blue on the paper, gold on blue on the skin. Anyone watching would think I had dressed for a wedding.

Come and get me when you can. The bus goes on to the coast on Thursday, and I have decided to be on it.
