Black and white photo of fine line script lettering reading Wild Child on the side of a ribcage, above a dark garment band.

Wild Child script on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows the words Wild Child written in a thin, flowing script across the side of a torso. The linework is fine and even, with the tall letters of W, l and d and the C looping above the baseline. The photograph is monochrome, with a dark garment at the top edge and a softly blurred tiled floor in the background.

Dear Ada,

Father has taken to his chair with his bad chest, so the lamp is mine now, and I will not pretend I like it. Mrs Pryce from the cottage says the wild child of Skerrow has finally been tamed. I told her the wild child has simply been given the stairs. There are one hundred and twelve of them, and I have counted every one each night since the Tuesday.

Last Thursday the fog came in off the Sound thick as porridge. The Ellen Mair was due from Stornoway and Father could not bear to see the lens sitting dark. I went up at dusk with the oil can and the trimming knife, and I did it the way he showed us when we were small, slow and in order, wick then chimney then glass. Nobody told me I could. Nobody told me I couldn't either.

At half past two her horn sounded from the north, close enough to hear the chain in her hawse. She came round the skerries on my light and did not strike. In the morning there was a pot of tea left on the step and a note in capitals, WILD CHILD, from Captain Gunn, who has never once learned to spell my name.

Father says I should be proud. I am mostly tired, and I think I would rather be wild than merely useful. Come home at Christmas and climb the stairs with me. Bring your own knife.

Nell
