The wreath was already hanging on the nail by the door when the boat came back without Ruairidh. Mairi had woven it the night before from daisies off the machair, bell-flowers the wind had bent over the dunes, and six grey feathers she had pulled from the gull that flew into the kitchen window in March. Her mother said a wreath on a door was for weddings or wakes, and this was neither, yet nobody took it down.

Three days later a woman walked up from the ferry with a canvas bag and no coat. She asked for the house where the daisies were, and when Mairi stepped out with the bread knife still in her hand, the woman only nodded as if she had been expected. She said the sea had kept Ruairidh for its own reasons, and that a wreath of living things would not bring him home, but it would tell the water who was waiting.

They sat on the step until the light went long and orange across the bay. The woman sang a song Mairi did not know, low and rising like wind through rushes, and when it ended the daisies on the wreath had opened wider than they had been all week. Mairi took one feather from the ring and laid it on the sill.

Ruairidh came up the road at dusk with salt in his beard and a smooth stone in his pocket he could not explain. Nobody on the island ever asked where the woman had gone. Every spring after that the bell-flowers came up along the path to the shore, and the gulls stopped coming to the window.
