Small fine line paw print tattoo with a red heart in the central pad, placed on the side of an ankle.

Paw print with red heart on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A small paw print made of four toe beans and a larger pad sits on the side of a foot near the ankle bone. The toe beans and pad are drawn in thin black outline with dotted and stippled detail, and the heart inside the pad is filled with red. The plain skin and dark background keep the focus on the design.

Sit close now, because the wind off Scarrow Head never waits for anybody. Old Tomas Riddle kept the light there for forty winters, and he kept a rough grey lurcher called Biscuit who climbed the one hundred and twelve steps ahead of him every dusk and came down behind him every dawn, nose to the cold stone as if she were checking the tower for cracks.

The November gale came in sideways, and by midnight the lamp had gone dark. The clockwork seized, the glass smoked, and out past the Mare's Teeth the Marguerite was running with nothing to steer by. Tomas swore and wound the mechanism by hand while the spray hit the gallery windows like gravel. Biscuit would not leave the rail. She stood on her hind legs, barking into the black, until Tomas looked where she looked and saw the boat's one lantern bobbing, lost, a cable off the rocks.

The Marguerite came home that night on the beam of a light that burned until morning. They found Tomas at the foot of the tower with his hand still on the crank, and Biscuit lying across his boots as if she meant to keep him warm. The fishermen buried her under the rowan and cut a heart into the stone for her. Every winter since, the lamp at Scarrow Head has been lit at the same hour, and the sailors say that if you climb up at dusk, you can hear a light tread on the stairs, going up ahead of you.
