Pearl Haddock's allotment backed onto the gap in the clouds, and that was where I first landed, skidding down a row of leeks with my board hissing under me and my halo wobbling like a loose hubcap. Nobody upstairs had ever told me that a halo does not steady a landing. It only makes people look up.

Mrs Haddock was not looking up. She was on her knees among the runner beans with a trowel, and she said, without turning round, that angels who came down her garden path on wheels could pay for the broken canes. I offered her a feather. She said she had enough feathers in her pillows, thank you, and asked whether I could carry a letter to her husband, who had gone up the hill to the allotment society's summer fair in a hot air balloon and had not been seen since.

So I took her letter, folded small and tucked behind my ear, and pushed off down the lane towards the postbox at the top of the hill. The board hummed. The gulls didn't mind me. I passed the church, the bus shelter, and the pub where Ronnie sat outside with his pint, and each time I thought of the little heart Pearl had drawn in the corner of the envelope, pressed hard enough to dent the paper.

Three days later she came out to the shed with a tin of pink paint, saw the mess I had made of her fence trying a kickflip, and laughed until she had to sit down on an upturned bucket. Then she wrote me a second letter, and I carried that one too, because some jobs are the kind you do sitting down, knees up, wings out to dry in the sun.
