Winged halo tattoo on a thigh

Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a halo above a shaded heart-like form, with two outstretched wings in bold black linework on each side. The heart is filled with soft grey shading and a few lighter highlights, while the wings use solid black strokes with feathered detail. The image is a close crop of skin with a strip of red fabric along the top edge, and the design sits centrally.

The lift on Harrow Court had been out since Tuesday, so Mags Dunleavy took the stairs with a carrier bag of mince in one hand and her son's school jumper over her shoulder. Fourteen floors. By the ninth she had stopped counting the graffiti and started counting the landings where someone had left a single trainer.

On the twelfth floor a lad was sitting on the concrete with a biro and the back of a Chinese menu, drawing. He was fifteen, maybe, all elbows, and he had been drawing the same thing for a week: a heart with a ring of light over it, and wings either side like a pair of open doors. "It's for Shaz," he said, before she asked. "Her nan's in the hospice. She wants something to look at that isn't the ceiling."

Mags sat down beside him, which her knees did not thank her for. She took the biro and drew the feathers the way her own mother had drawn them in the back of a school atlas, short hard strokes, flicking up at the tips. "Heart's too round," she said. "Hearts aren't round when you've been carrying something a long time. They sag a bit at the bottom."

He looked at her as if she'd sworn in church. Then he laughed, took the pen back, and made the heart sag.

When she reached her door the lift was grinding back into life behind her, its doors opening on nobody. She left the menu on the mat for him to find in the morning, the wings wider than the page, the halo only half closed, as if it were still deciding whether to stay.
