Bear with balloon and bees on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A yellow cartoon bear resembling Winnie the Pooh hangs from a blue-grey balloon on a thin dark string. Small bees with yellow and black markings drift around the figure and balloon. The bear is outlined in dark ink with shaded fur, and the balloon has soft blue-grey shading, set against lightly pink skin.

Now sit still, you lot, and mind the wasps, because the bees in this orchard have never once minded their manners. Last August, when the Pippins hung heavy on the boughs, a bear called Hobb came over the stile from Cold Ashby with a balloon tied to his paw. It was blue-grey, the colour of a wet slate roof, and he had bought it from Mr Pargeter's stall for three pennies he'd been saving in a jam jar since May.

The trouble with balloons is that they have opinions about the wind. A gust came off the hop field and tore the string clean out of Hobb's paw, and up went the balloon, bobbing over the apple rows like a lost thought. Hobb did what any bear with honey on his mind would do. He jumped. He caught the string on the second try, and up he went with it, his short legs kicking at nothing, while the hives woke up to see what the fuss was.
They came out in a gold cloud, a dozen at least, and they hummed round him as though he were a flower that had finally learned to fly. Hobb laughed so hard he nearly let go again. 'You're my escort now,' he told them, and the old queen, who had never once been called an escort, stung him on the nose for his cheek.
Hobb came down by the bramble hedge at sundown with a bump and a sniff, and he tied the balloon to the orchard gate, where it still knocks in the evenings if you listen close. Now off you go. Mind the stile, mind the bees, and if you ever see a bear in a hurry, let him pass.
