Winnie the Pooh with a butterfly

Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Winnie the Pooh stands with his back to the viewer, looking up at a small butterfly with pink and pale blue wings resting above his nose. Bold black outlines define the bear, who is filled with yellow, with a red shirt and yellow legs. The design is simple and centred on a pinkish skin background.

Dear Tom,

The butterfly came back on Tuesday, the blue one with the pink tips, and it sat on Barnaby's nose the whole time I was hanging the washing. I didn't shoo it. Mrs Pryce from next door says a butterfly in the yard in February is a sign of a letter, so I'm writing you one before the post van reaches the top of the road.

The bear is still in the front window where you left him, his red jumper gone pale from the sun, one ear sewn back on with Mam's green thread. Edie wants him moved to her room, but I've told her he's keeping watch for the shift whistle. She stands on the chair every morning at six and looks up over the tip as if someone might come down the hill.

Gwyn says there was a stoppage at the Pit on Thursday. Four hours, nobody hurt, but they've sent the men home without pay until the inspector signs. I'm not telling you what to do. I know the lamp and the hook and the drop of the cage better than the chapel does. Just come home on the Sunday train and bring the good coal, not the wet stuff from the north face.

The butterfly was gone by teatime. Edie swears it flew straight for the mountain, though I told her butterflies can't read maps. Come home, love. The bear has been looking at the road all week, and so have I.

Yours, Nell
