Witch hat with moon phases on upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black witch hat with a grey buckle and a small star at the tip sits at the centre of the design, with a black brim beneath. Above it, a dotted arc of moon phases rises from crescent to full, drawn with fine dots and solid shapes. The tattoo is in black ink only, shown on the upper arm against a brick wall background.

The buckle on the hat has come loose again, and you are kneeling in the wet heather trying to thread it back through before the carrier's cart reaches the top of Blackmoss Pass. Ada stands over you with a bundle of quartz under one arm, counting the sky. Crescent, half, gibbous, full. She says the moon has been slipping for three nights, and that a witch who lets her buckle go is a witch who gets lost on the way down.

The wind comes over the ridge carrying sheep bells and the smell of peat smoke from the valley far below. You pull the strap tight, feel the little brass tongue catch, and sit back on your heels. Above you the dotted arc of moons hangs in the grey, the newest one invisible, the way it always is when you most need it. Ada taps the star at the tip of the hat with one knuckle, the way her mother taught her to test a bell for cracks, and it rings faintly.
The carrier, Tom Pennock, shouts from the cart that the light is going. You stand. The hat sits square on your head for the first time since Keld, and the downhill road unrolls below you in a long grey ribbon. Ada hands you the quartz without a word. You put it in your coat pocket, where it knocks against the tin of salve and the ferry ticket you have no intention of using, and you climb up onto the cart as the dark moon finally rises behind the ridge.
