Witch lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the word WITCH tattooed in black script lettering across the forearm. The letters have thin, connected linework with a few sharper strokes, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The skin is pale and the background is softly out of focus, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Doreen from the post office had been spreading it since Michaelmas that I'd charmed the Harrow boy's cough out of him with a poultice of thyme and spit. Maybe I had said something over the pot. Maybe I'd said plenty. Half the village buys its bread from me and the other half crosses the road to avoid the window, and both halves come in for the rye on Saturdays.
At half five the dough finally lifted under my palm, slow as a tide, and I felt that small warm give that means it's alive. I shaped three tins, then took the chalk to the slate by the till and wrote WITCH in my own looping hand, because if they were going to say it, I would at least spell it properly. Then I put the kettle on.
The first customer was the Harrow boy, nine years old and stiff with importance, asking for a penny's worth of crusts for the ducks. I gave him a heel still warm from the tin and told him the trick was patience and a good damp cloth. He looked at me as though I'd handed him a spell, and I suppose I had.
