Witch on a broomstick silhouette on a calf

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a witch in a wide-brimmed pointed hat rides a broomstick, with long hair streaming behind her. Fine dotwork stippling fills the background and adds texture around the figure. The image is entirely black and grey, with strong contrast against the skin and a dark backdrop framing the tattoo.

Dear Nell, the frost has got into the pump again, so Dad has been carrying buckets from the trough like it's 1890. You'll laugh, but last night I saw a witch over the top field. Not a real one, I think, though she flew as if she knew the wind personally.

She was black against the snow, hat brim as wide as a cartwheel, hair streaming out behind her like a torn flag. The broomstick ran straight as a ruled line. Above her the whole sky was speckled with frost-light, as though someone had flicked a brush of ink across the dark and not bothered to tidy up. I stood at the back door with the lamp and watched her go over the beeches until she was just a pin in the black.

Went out with the lantern after, to see what she'd left. Nothing but a crow on the gatepost, looking at me as if I owed it rent. Mam says witches only come round when someone has been unkind to the hens. I have been unkind to the hens, Nell, so I've left them a cabbage stalk and a promise, and I've been up early every morning since to check the promise is still being kept.

Come home for Christmas if the lane is passable. Bring the good tea and the wool from Mrs Hale's stall. And if you see a hat hanging on the line when you reach the gate, don't touch it. It's only ours on loan, and she will want it back.

Your loving sister, Bea
