Wolf head outline on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single unbroken black line forms the outline of an animal's head facing right, with pointed ears and a small eye marked by a short stroke. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is dark against the pale skin. The tattoo sits centrally on the wrist, with the forearm running down the frame in a warm, sepia-toned photograph.

You reach the Gallt Pass before the snow closes it, carrying the surveyor's chain your uncle left you and a tin of tea that will not last the night. The hut at the summit has one window and a stove that smokes whenever the wind comes from the north. Nobody has wintered up here since the wolves came back down from the Carneddau, or so the shepherds in Llanrwst insist over their pints.

Pull the ledger from under the bench. Your uncle drew the ridge in a single unbroken stroke, never lifting the nib, so that the line of the hill and the line of the animal crossing it became one thing. On the last page is a wolf's head facing east, ears pricked, a short dash for the eye. Beneath it he wrote: the pass remembers who walks it. You took it for a joke until the third night, when something moved along the ridge at the exact pace of your own breathing.

The ink thickens in the cold, so you trace the outline again with the same steady hand, not hurrying, keeping the line unbroken as he taught you. Outside the snow comes sideways. A grey shape sits on the cairn at the edge of the lamplight, head turned towards the hut, watching you the way you once watched him copy out maps.

In the morning the cairn is bare and the ledger's final line has been finished in a hand that is not yours. You close the book, tuck it inside your coat, and start down the far side where the path follows the water. The mark stays with you all the way to the valley, a line that never lifts.
