Sit down, the queue will be an hour yet, and the guard has heard all my stories already. Hand me your papers first, then listen. Years ago, when the customs post was only a tin roof and a stove, a grey mare came down the pass from the Vellan side with no rider and no brand. The officer on duty, a man called Tomas Irrel who counted every sheep twice, wanted to send her back. She stood at the barrier with her head turned away from him, looking at the far hills as if they owed her money. Her mane lay out behind her in long strands, the way wind combs grass.

Nobody could say where she belonged. The villagers on the Sallow side claimed she came from the horse fairs at the top of the valley, and the drovers swore she had been sold twice and had walked out of both sales. Tomas tried to write her down on the form. Under nationality he wrote nothing. Under destination he wrote one word, then crossed it out, because the word was home and he did not believe in home for animals.

She went through that night without a stamp. In the morning the barrier was up, the stove was cold, and there were hoofprints in the frost leading east towards the sea, with no marks of anyone following. Tomas kept the blank form in his drawer for thirty years, and I have never once been able to fill it in.
