Woman holding a heart on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A woman with dark hair, a pearl headpiece with a crescent moon, and drop earrings looks directly at the viewer, holding a red anatomical heart in one hand. A black feather is shaded along the lower edge, and a dark patterned garment frames the figure. The piece uses bold outlines, smooth shading and rich red, gold and skin tones against the surrounding skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are forty miles past the last filling station when the lorry coughs once and goes quiet, and the dark out here is so total that your headlamps seem to light nothing but themselves. You walk toward a single bulb hung on a pole, where a caravan leans against a rusted sign for Sand Crossing Petrol. The woman sitting on an upturned crate there wears a pearl band across her brow with a crescent moon pinned at its centre. Her name, she says, is Ottilie, and she has been expecting a lorry with a dead fuel line.

She doesn't ask what's wrong. She holds out her open palm, and on it sits a red heart, still faintly warm, as though it were only just taken from someone. The road takes one thing from every driver who passes after dark, she tells you, and she would rather it took something she can use. You say you have nothing to give. She tilts her head at the black feather tucked into your jacket, the one you picked up at the last rest stop because it reminded you of your grandmother's hat, and waits.

You hand it over. She lays the feather along the edge of the heart, and the two of them lift together, weightless, toward the stars. Ottilie takes a wire from her apron, bends it into a hook, and says the fuel line is only choked with sand. Ten minutes, she says, and you'll be on your way. When the engine turns over, you look back, and in the mirror she is holding the heart up to the moon, weighing it, while the bulb above her buzzes on.
