Woman portrait with multiple eyes on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A painted portrait of a woman with dark hair swept into an updo, her face framed by a soft grey wash. Several eyes are scattered across her forehead and cheeks, and her lips are rendered in a muted red. Smooth blended shading gives the face volume, while the warm pinks and grey background are set against the curve of the leg.

Here is the part the old ones leave out. Every eye she opened was one the palace had lost. A clerk who had signed a false tax. A cook who had poisoned a dog and blamed the bread. A guard who had looked away from a crying child. The girl pressed each one into her skin with a bead of red wax, and they settled there, blinking, and they did not leave. By midwinter she had eyes on her brow, her cheeks, her chin, and still they came, because the kingdom was full of people looking away.

The queen climbed to the glassblower's hut in the last hour before the thaw and asked what the girl wanted for her trouble. The girl only touched her own lips, pressed closed and painted the colour of a winter rose, and said, "Hush, and let them see you." The queen did not sleep that night. In the morning the palace gates stood open, and every eye in the city had turned back toward the castle, waiting for her to explain herself.
