Fairy silhouette blowing hearts
Black and grey · Flash
A solid black silhouette of a winged fairy with her hair in a bun, one hand raised and a trail of small hearts drifting from her mouth. The figure is shown in flat black with no internal linework or shading. The plain white background and simple outline make it read as a stencil-style design.

Dear Marjorie, I am writing this on the back of a timetable because the kettle has gone cold and the last up train is not due until twenty to midnight, so you will have to forgive the scrawl. Something odd came through the lost property hatch this afternoon, and I have not stopped thinking about it.

It was a cardboard box that had been sat under the ticket machine since Tuesday, tied with garden string. Inside, wrapped in brown paper, was a black paper cut-out of a small woman with wings like a cut-glass window and her hair knotted up at the back. Her hand was lifted to her mouth as if she had just thrown a kiss, and from her lips drifted a trail of tiny hearts, each one cut separately and nothing joining them. There was no label. Only a note in pencil under the paper that said, Keep the last one for the 4:10.
I did not know what it meant, so I did what you would have done and propped it on the windowsill of the waiting room, facing the platform. At ten past four the 4:10 pulled out with its usual grumble of brakes, and a girl in a green coat pressed her palm to the glass of the third carriage. Then she did something I shall not forget. She blew a kiss back towards the cut-out, though she could not possibly have seen it from there.
The box is still on the sill and the note is in my pocket. I have decided that a figure like that belongs to someone who is always leaving, and I suppose I have decided that I am the one who has to keep the last heart.
