Word tattoo across the upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a man's bare upper back, with both hands resting on the back of his head so his face is hidden. The word "artist" is set in lowercase sans-serif lettering in black ink, centred between the shoulder blades near the base of the neck. The dark background and high-contrast lighting focus attention on the skin and the tattoo.

Forty years of shopfronts in Whitstable had taught her that most lettering fails at the join, not the middle. The new gallery sign had to be plain, the brief said. Nothing with a tail, nothing that looked like it was trying.

Her nephew Dev came up the lane with two coffees and found her kneeling on the pavement, tracing the word onto the board with a pencil. "Artist," he read aloud. "Just that?" She nodded. Lowercase, no capital, no full stop, the same sans-serif the council used on bus shelters so nobody could argue about what it said. "Folk will stop and wonder what it's selling," she said. "That's the point of it."
They painted it through the afternoon while the light slid off the harbour wall. Dev held the tin and she loaded the brush, and at each stroke the black went on flat and even, no shadows, no flourish, the same weight from the a to the t. When the last stroke dried he stepped back and squinted. "Doesn't look like much."
Ruth wiped her hands on her apron and considered it. The board was dark green and the word sat in the middle of it like a plain question. "No," she said. "It looks like someone who has stopped explaining."
