Watercolour world map on a thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a world map with the continents of the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia visible, along with smaller islands and dots. The outlines are soft and irregular, with the fills blended in watercolour-like washes of pink, red, blue, purple and yellow. The design sits centrally on a pale, softly lit section of skin, with a blue fabric edge visible at the top of the frame.

The ink on the chart has bled again, and Mrs Okonedo is already tutting over it when you come in from the harbour with wet boots. She keeps the printing works at the top of the hill on Sallow Island, where the ferry comes twice a week and the gulls sit on the telegraph wire like punctuation. Your job is to fill in the coastlines by hand before the sheets go south to the schools. Pencil first, she says. Then the water, never the other way round.

Today the Atlantic is the trouble. You have been trying to lift the wash of blue off the paper without tearing the edge of Brazil, and every time you lean in, the colour runs into Africa and makes it look as though the continent has been dipped in the sea by accident. Mrs Okonedo laughs and tells you that is how the real world looks from a boat: nothing sits quite where it should.

So you stop fighting it. You wet the brush, load it with rose madder and let it bloom across Europe until the borders dissolve into one warm stain. Yellow for the deserts, a bruise of violet for the Pacific, and the small islands you dot in last with a fingertip of ochre, because nobody remembers the islands until they need one.

When the sheet dries, the continents look as though they might drift off the page by morning. Mrs Okonedo holds it up to the window, squints, and says it will do. You roll it into the post tube yourself. Somewhere a child will unfold it, find Sallow as a single ochre speck near the edge, and wonder what it must be like to live on a dot like that.
