World map outline on an inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand and inner wrist are photographed from above, with a small world map tattooed in thin black outline on the wrist. The continents of Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas are drawn with simple single lines and no shading. The background is paper covered in overlapping passport stamps, and the tattoo is the sharpest element in the frame.

Forty years of arrivals and departures. She could tell a Lisbon stamp from a Gdansk one by the weight of the rubber alone.

Idris Vane drew maps on the backs of spare ferry tickets during his breaks. He used a fine nib and never lifted it, so each continent came off the paper in a single unbroken pass, as if the pen had been told where the coast ran and was only obeying. 'Coastlines should be drawn once,' he said, when she asked why he never went back to fix a bay. He said most things like that, plainly, and she had loved him for it, though never in any way she managed to say aloud.
On her last shift before retirement she found a sheet folded into the stamp drawer, squared to the size of a boarding card. It was the world, outlined and unshaded, with a small arrow where Harwich sat and no other marks at all. She stamped it once with the arrival mark, pressing carefully, and the ink took unevenly across the paper, leaving the tip of Africa crisp and the Americas faint, as if the sea had been the only thing that wanted to be remembered.
