Fine line world map on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand with a small outline of the world map tattooed on the inner wrist, showing the continents of Europe, Africa and Asia. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is black on skin. The map sits in the lower right of the frame against a cream background printed with passport stamps and dates.

The lodger in the back attic left his passport on the hall table the morning he went, and I kept it because nobody came back for it. Mrs Pargeter from number six said I ought to post it to the consulate, but I didn't know which consulate he meant, and anyway it was full of stamps, and a person can't throw away a thing like that.

I went through it with the kettle going. Lisbon, two days in March. Something in Izmir with the ink gone blue. A bus station in Almaty, if I was reading the Cyrillic right, which I wasn't. Forty-one stamps across eleven pages, and he'd been in our box room for three weeks paying in advance with coins from a tin, saying he was only passing through, the way everyone says they are passing through Clacton.

On the last page, under the Marrakech entry, someone had drawn the world in biro. Europe, the long hook of Africa, the lump of Asia pushing east as if it wanted to climb out of the margin. No names, just the coastlines, pressed so hard the paper had torn a little where the Atlantic should have been.

I pinned that page to the board behind the reception desk, beside the tide times and the sign about no dogs on the beds. Guests still ask about it. I tell them it's the only map in Sea View Lodgings that has never once been wrong about where I'm standing, and then I put the kettle on for them, because that much I can be sure of.
