Yellow crescent moon with orange symbol
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A tattoo of a yellow crescent moon with a bold black outline sits on pale skin, with an orange ornate symbol placed in the hollow of the crescent. The linework is solid and even, and the yellow fill is flat with little shading. The photo is taken close up from above, with the wrist and a wooden surface visible around the edges.

The lamp died at the bottom of Shaw's Level, and for a long minute nobody spoke. Then Dilys struck a match against the wall, and the flame showed the timbers sweating black, the cage hanging empty above us, and the stub of candle she had kept in her tin since the spring. Nobody had told her to carry it. She just did, the way her mother had carried a crust in her pocket for the pit ponies.

Up top, the night shift had a rule that you looked at the sky before you went down and again when you came up. Dilys said the moon was a boat for the men who never made it back. I told her that was daft. She drew one on the back of a tally card with a cracked pencil, a crescent fat as a rowing boat, and in its hollow a small sign, the one her nan scratched above the lamp-room door for luck. The lines were thick and certain, and she coloured the moon in with the yellow of a dropped sovereign.
When the bell finally rang three times, the rope went taut and the iron came down towards us like something alive. Dilys pressed the card into my palm. Keep it, she said. You'll be the one going down next week, and I'll want you to look up.
I kept that card folded in my boot for twenty-six years. On my first morning above ground, the sun came over the spoil heaps the colour of brass, and I looked for the moon out of habit and found only a thin pale rim of it, fading over Kirkby Fell.
