Cartoon face with glasses in a double circle
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black line tattoo shows a cartoon character's face with a bob haircut, round glasses, closed eyes and a small smile. The face sits inside a double circle outline, and the linework is bold and even with no shading. The photograph is greyscale and shows the tattoo centred on smooth skin.

The peep-show booth at the end of the Michaelmas fair stood between the candyfloss van and the generator, its round window framed by two painted rings of red and gold. She had been asleep since before Ruby Sayle's father won the booth at cards in Hull, and nobody on the travelling circuit had ever seen her open them.

Teddy Marr, who swept sawdust for pocket money, decided she was only pretending. Every evening after the last lorry left the field, he rang the brass bell on the counter, three short taps, and waited. Nothing came. He tried a sherbet lemon, then a whistle, then a peppermint pressed flat against the glass, which Ruby said was the daftest thing she had ever seen a boy do.
On the last night of the season the generator coughed and died at eleven, and the whole field went black. Teddy crouched by the booth with a torch under his jumper, certain she had been watching him all summer. When he shone the beam through the round window, the painted mouth had curled up at one corner, as if she had been waiting for him to stop talking.
He never told Ruby. He left the bell on the counter and swept round the booth twice a week through the autumn. By November the peppermint had gone, and so had the lamp he'd hung inside the window. Only the spectacles caught the light, and the little smile stayed put.
