Pin-up and red truck on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A pin-up woman in a blue shirt, cap and red heels sits in the foreground, with a large red semi truck behind her and a swirling orange and blue sky above. The linework is bold with soft grey shading on the ground and truck, and the palette is rich in reds, blues and oranges. The design fills the upper arm and wraps over the shoulder, with the figure central and the truck framing her.

Snow had frozen the ruts of Hollin Farm's back lane so hard that Dot Pell walked the last half mile with a spare set of pistons on her shoulder. The red truck sat where her father had left it in November, nose toward the gate, its chrome dulled by a skin of hoar frost. Her uncle wanted it moved before the auction men came on Thursday.

She found the sump plug first, then the cracked hose, and spent the afternoon on her back on a feed sack with her cap pushed askance and her fingers gone numb. The cab radio gave out the shipping forecast in a voice like a warm bath. Her father had sung along to it on every long run, badly, and she hummed it now to keep the cold from getting into her chest.
By four the light had turned orange over the top field, the kind of sky he used to swear was a sign from somewhere. She wiped her hands on her blue work shirt, straightened the cap and looked at the truck the way he always had, as if it might still turn round and come back for her. It did not. The engine caught on the third try, a cough and then a roar that sent rooks up from the hedge.
She drove it to the gate herself, slowly, and left the headlights on the snow so the lane glowed like a stage. Then she climbed down, found the chalk in the door pocket, and drew a small woman in a cap on the rusted step, leaning against nothing, waiting for someone to notice. The auction men could take the truck. The woman on the step she would keep.
