Totoro holding an umbrella on the upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A cartoon Totoro character sits in the centre of the frame, holding a teal umbrella over its head with both arms outstretched. The bold dark outline and simple shading give the figure a flat, graphic look, and the design sits within an open circular shape. Teal and green tones dominate the umbrella and body, with a few darker grey-green areas, against smooth skin on the upper back.

Dear Ruth,

You will not believe what the bus shelter at Hollin Cross looked like on Tuesday. Mr Pryce had left it open at both ends again, and when the rain came sideways off the moor I stood there with my shoes full of water, sure I would have to walk the whole four miles to the hall in my good stockings. Then something shifted in the corner of the shelter. I took it for a sack of feed. It was a grey shape, round as a tea cosy, with a belly you could have sat a cat on and two small ears standing up like folded letters.
It did not look at me so much as wait for me, the way Dad's old collie used to wait at the gate. It was holding a green umbrella over its head, the ribbed sort that springs back when the wind catches it, and it held the handle out with both arms as if I were the one who needed keeping dry. I took it. I have no idea what else I was supposed to do.
We walked the lane together. It hummed something that rose and fell like a kettle coming to the boil, and the puddles seemed to sort themselves out of our way. At the stile it set me down, tipped the umbrella at the sky, and vanished into the hedge with a sound like someone shaking out a wet rug.
I still have the umbrella. It is folded behind the coats, and I am sure it is dry. The dance was grand, by the way. Tell Frank I didn't dance with him.
Love, Nell
