Yin yang sun design on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A dark brown henna-style design sits on the inner forearm, centred on a yin yang symbol framed by a dotted circle. Flame-like petals rise from behind the circle, and dotted lines with spiral curls trail down towards the wrist. The design is a single flat tone against pale skin, set on a grey pavement background.

The oven door takes both hands to open, and by the time the peel slides under the last tin the window over the sink has gone from black to the colour of weak tea. Nobody on Quarry Row is awake except the dog at number nine and the milk float, which stops outside the shop every morning at twenty past four and never once comes in.

Dev arrives at ten to five with his bicycle lamp still burning, and he doesn't ask how the proof went. He takes the flour sack from you and says the sun is late again, as if he has been keeping its timetable himself. You tell him the sun has never been late in its life. He says that's exactly the trouble with it. His grandmother used to say a loaf needs the cold half and the hot half in equal measure, a night of slow rising to match a morning of fire, and he has never once let you forget she said it.
You sketch a circle in the flour on the bench with the back of a knife, the way you did when you were nine and Dev's mother let you help on Saturdays. Then you press two small dots into it, one above the other, and watch them sink into the powder. Dev looks at them for a long moment, then picks up the scraper to sweep them away, and you catch his wrist before the blade touches the wood.
By the time the sun clears the chimney on the mill, the first tray is cooling on the rack and the light is laying itself across the bench in a clean gold bar. The circle is still there, with its two dots, one dark and one pale, and neither of you wipes them away.
