You have to believe script on forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Flowing cursive script spells out the phrase You have to believe across the forearm, drawn in solid black ink with smooth, even strokes. The top panel shows the tattoo in natural light, while the lower panel shows the same lettering under UV light, where it glows bright blue and small sparkle marks appear beside the text. The lettering runs horizontally across the frame, with the arm filling most of the image against a plain background.

Dear Nell, the lamp in the bothy has gone out again and I am writing this by the last of the moon through the window, so forgive the wobble. I only want you to know what Mr Pryce said at the cage yesterday, because it has stuck to me like coal dust. He said the seam at the far face is thin as a wafer and there is nothing in it but a rumour of gold, and that every man who goes down there is a fool. I told him the fools are the ones who keep the lamps lit. He laughed, but he did not argue.

There is a stone by the pump at the top of the row, the one with the white vein through it. Walk past it on your way to the shop and look at it properly. Old Jenkin carved a line into the flat of it years ago with a nail, and the rain has never quite worn it away. It says what I have been trying to tell you since you were small enough to sit on the table: you have to believe, even when the roof is weeping and the dark is heavier than the hill above it. I know how that sounds written down. It reads like a hymn from a Sunday box. But I have watched men keep faith in a tunnel with nothing but a tin cup and a prayer, and they came up.

Keep the lamp trimmed for me. I will be home for the dinner bell, and I expect the kettle to be on. Your loving brother, Tom.
