Old Tamsin Rorke kept the lamp there for thirty-one winters. Every night she climbed the hundred and four steps, trimmed the wick, and wound the clockwork that turned the great lens. When the fog came in thick she rang the bell by hand, and she never once let it stop, not even the night her own son sailed past on a coal boat and did not wave.

In the last winter her hands shook too much to hold the trimming scissors, so the boy from the village, Eli Pardoe, came up to help. He learned the count of the steps and the order of the wicks. On the final night she told him the lamp did not guide ships. It only showed them where the rocks were, and the rest was up to the men at the wheel. He thought that was a poor sort of magic. She laughed and said that was the whole of the trade.

In spring the bell went quiet and the lamp burned on, steady as a stone. Eli kept it lit, and when the fishermen asked who had the tower now, he pointed at the lintel and said, "221B, same as always." They came in on the tide, every one of them.
