A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
By the last week of August the laminated sheet pinned to our stall had gone soft at the corners from the damp, and the ink on the transfers smudged if you breathed on them. Dad ran the coconut shy and I ran everything else: a biro, a sponge, and a stack of sheets with twelve little designs in a grid, all in the same wobbly black. Customers picked the rocket, the donut or the green alien. I'd press the sheet to their wrist, count to thirty under my breath, then peel it back slow, the way we'd been taught.

The lips with the flag went to a lad who said his cousin had them in Tenerife. Nobody wanted the peace sign, which Dad said was because it looked like a hire-car logo. The conversation hearts were a hit with the girls from the chip shop, who ordered NOPE and SASSY in a row and made me do them twice. I kept the unicorn for myself, one faded blue sheet folded in my back pocket, and I'd take it out whenever the generator coughed and the rides went silent.
On the final night a lad came up to the stall with his hands in his pockets and asked for the moon. I told him the moon was a dud design and we'd run out, and he looked so let down that I gave him the alien anyway, the one with the planet on its forehead. He pressed it on himself and peeled it back too fast, and it came away torn right across one eye.
He laughed, held it up to the light and said it looked better that way. Then the lights on the big wheel went out one by one from the top down, and the real moon came up over the dodgems, sharp and white. I laid the last blue unicorn flat on the counter and smoothed it out with my thumb, ready for whoever came next.
