Dear diary, 3.40 a.m., Ward 7. Nobody warns you that every call bell on nights rings the same flat chime, and it gets into the back of your skull by about two. Since half one it has been Bed 12, bay three, Mr Pryce, who presses his bell for water he never drinks. He just likes to hear feet on the lino.

I went in at last. He had the call cord wound twice round his wrist like a chain, and he'd switched on the reading lamp so the whole bay glowed orange, like the sky over the car park when the furnace at the depot is lit. He said the bell was loud enough to wake the dead and asked whether the lads on the night desk still played that old record on the radio. I said I didn't know. He hummed the riff badly, and I hummed the wrong bit back, and for a minute neither of us minded the clock.

Then the lamp flickered the way the old wiring does, and he asked me to take the cord off his wrist before it cut him. I unwound it. Down at the station the bell went quiet, and the silence was like a dropped tray, the kind everyone turns to look at.

He asked me to write something down for his daughter, so I have. I've put the time as 3.52, the water as untouched, and his words as he said them: keep the bell ringing, love, but don't let it keep you. I'll leave the cup on the trolley and go back to the desk. Somebody else will need answering before dawn.
