Headphone silhouette and cassette on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a head wearing headphones sits above a cassette tape in muted orange, cream and brown. A strip of unspooled tape curls from the cassette up towards the silhouette. Black ink fills most of the design, with the cassette providing the only colour against the skin.

The cassette-mender of Orrin Vale keeps her bench under the clock tower, and on the third morning of the thaw a boy arrives with a tape that has crawled out of its shell like a snail from a cracked cup. You take it from him without a word, because in Orrin Vale nobody speaks until the spool is turning. The ribbon has snagged on the take-up hub, and somewhere in those brown loops is the last song his grandmother hummed over the washing.

You fit the tiny screwdriver into the shell's seams and lift the housing. The tape has kinked into a long curl, lying loose like the tail of a kite. Outside, the king's criers are nailing a fresh proclamation to the gatepost, ordering that all music be struck from the realm and melted down for lantern glass. You have heard such decrees before. Each one comes with a bell, and each bell eventually falls silent.

You work with a pencil and a drop of oil, easing the ribbon back onto the spools turn by turn, until the wheel catches and the boy's humming leaks faintly through the grille. He wears the headphones the old way, cupped over his ears, and he shuts his eyes as though a door has opened somewhere behind him. Across the square, the king's bell begins to ring.

When you hand the tape back, he asks what he owes. You tell him to play it loudly, right under the bell. He walks out into the square with the ribbon trailing from the cassette like a loose thread, and for the first time in a long season, the people of Orrin Vale turn their heads to listen.
