Acorn tattoo on an inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small acorn is tattooed on the inner wrist, with its cap and nut drawn in fine lines and soft grey shading. The nut is shaded lightly to give it a rounded, three-dimensional look, and the cap has a textured pattern. The image is a close, dim phone photo of the wrist and open palm, with the acorn placed near the centre of the frame.

The oak at the top of Hollin Lane had dropped more acorns that autumn than anyone in Wrenfold could remember, and the pigs were fat on them before the frost came. Old Mab Thresher said it was because the tree was tired of being counted. She sent her grandson up the lane with a sack and a instruction to fill it only with the ones that had already fallen, never the ones still clinging to the twig.

He did as he was told for three mornings. On the fourth he found a nut lying in the ditch by the stile, its cap still tight and its skin still green, and he picked it up because it seemed a shame to leave it in the wet. He carried it home in his fist and set it on the windowsill where the light came through the glass.

By Candlemas it had dried to the colour of tea and the cap had loosened like an old hat. Mab saw it there and said nothing, which was how he knew she was pleased. In spring he planted it in the bottom field, in a hole he dug with his heel, and watered it from the rain butt every evening until the tree took.

The oak at the top of the lane is still standing. The little one by the stile is taller than his mother now, and nobody in Wrenfold has ever needed to tell him which acorns to leave alone.
