Fox and wolf tattoos on forearms
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two tattoos sit side by side on forearms. The left shows a fox leaping with its tail raised, drawn in loose black linework with orange and red wash. The right shows a grey wolf in a similar sketchy outline, with blue and teal shading along its body and a dark ink accent on its front leg.

Sit closer, the fire is only good for the length of a breath, and I have a fox to tell you about before your mother calls you in. The millers' girls called her Rusk, for the colour of her coat when the sun came low through the beeches. She ran the hedgerows the way flame runs a dry stalk, never where you expected her to be.

The shepherds called the wolf Tallow, grey as a wet stone and twice as patient. He came down out of the high pines the winter the river froze to its bed, and he found the fox at the lambing pen, perched on the gate post with a stolen egg balanced on one paw. Neither of them moved. Then the fox laughed, a sound like a cart wheel on gravel, and leapt the fence, and the wolf, who had not laughed in years, went after her.
They ran the forest's edge from one moon to the next. Where her tail brushed the bracken it turned orange and sparked, and where his breath hung in the cold it turned blue and stayed. The villagers swore the two of them were painting the wood a new colour each night, and some of them were right. When the thaw came, the fox stopped at the old boundary stone and waited. The wolf did not cross it. He lifted one forepaw, the way a dog asks to be let in, and that was all the goodbye either of them needed. If you stand where the beeches end at dusk, you may still see one bright streak and one grey shadow, chasing and never catching.
