Black ink tattoo of an aeroplane over two boarding passes on the inner wrist, with the word Heathrow visible on one pass.

Airplane and boarding pass on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo shows a silhouetted aeroplane in flight over two ticket-style boarding passes, with dashed perforation lines and printed text. The linework is clean and fairly thin, with solid black fill on the plane and outlines on the tickets. The image is entirely black and grey on a light skin tone, with a blurred Christmas tree with warm lights in the background.

Dear Oona,

The ferry was cancelled again on Tuesday, so Mam has taken to reading the timetable aloud at breakfast as if it were scripture. Nobody on Skarra has seen a plane land on the north field since the war, and the old men still argue over whether the noise they heard last week was thunder. I know it was the Heathrow flight, the one Papa swore would never bother with us. Twice a week now it crosses the harbour, high and silver, and the gulls scatter from it like they have been insulted.

You asked in your last letter whether I still have your boarding pass from the spring. I do. It is in the tin with the tide tables, folded in four, the stub still on. The seat number is smudged where the rain got in through the post, and the date reads 11 10 15, the day you said you would be gone a month and came back for good. I keep meaning to throw it out. I never do.

The council has voted to name the new airstrip after King Edrin, who never once set foot here, and the bakers are refusing to make the commemorative loaf because it has his face pressed into the crust. Ferris says it is the most ridiculous thing to happen on Skarra since they painted the lighthouse.

Write back soon, and tell me what London looks like from your window at that height. Mam says you have her chin and my bad temper, so I suppose you will manage.

Love, Wren
