Bayou Beauty pin-up with lotus and frog

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A stylised woman with dark hair in an updo, wearing a jewelled necklace and a small flower in her hair, looks over her shoulder while holding a green frog. She has a small floral design on her upper arm, and pink water lilies, green leaves and hanging moss frame an oval panel with a teal background. The bold outlines, smooth colour fills and glowing highlights are set against a tan backdrop, with a ribbon banner reading Bayou Beauty at the base.

The frog turned up at Ada Fontaine's roadside stall on the first morning of the flood, perched on a crate of pecans as though he had paid rent on it. Nobody in Breaux Landing had seen a frog that size, and nobody had ever seen one look so unimpressed by a woman with a cash box and a pencil behind her ear. Ada gave him a saucer of cream out of habit, and he drank it with great dignity.

By noon the water was lapping the second step of the church. The lilies on the lower lagoon, the pink ones her husband Remy had coaxed into a ring round the old cypress, had begun to slip their roots and drift towards the road. A man from the city in a pale linen suit stopped his car to tell her he would pay good silver for every bloom she could bring him by dusk. Ada said she would think on it. The frog hopped onto her wrist and stared up at her as if she had already decided.

She rowed out at dawn with the frog riding the prow. The cypress was hung with moss like grey lace, and the water inside its ring was green and still, full of small lights where the fireflies had not yet gone to bed. She cut the lilies loose one by one, laid them flat in the boat, and when the man's launch came chugging round the bend she simply tipped the whole pile back into the water. The frog croaked once, a sound like a door closing politely.

The city man went home with an empty van and a story about swamp superstition. Ada went home with a wet skirt and a frog who sat on the kitchen sill all winter. Each spring after that the lilies came back to her lagoon thicker than before, and the frog never once asked her for silver.
