All-seeing eye within crossed bones on neck

Dotwork · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a stippled eye with a detailed iris and pupil, set inside a triangle whose three sides are formed by bones with rounded ends. The shading is built from fine dots and hatched marks, giving the eye and bones a sculpted, engraved look. The design is in black and grey on pale skin and sits centrally on the back of the neck, with the rest of the subject's head and face out of view.

Tuesday, 4.10 a.m. The dough is proving in the back and I have been awake long enough that the ceiling has started to look like a map. Mr Okonedo's van is idling outside again, its headlamps pointed at the bins, and I have counted the paving slabs twice to keep from going to the window a third time.

Dad always said the trick to this hour is to stop pretending you can see anything and just look. So I look. The fishmonger's shutter is down with its tag still hanging off the handle. A fox crosses to the chip shop with a dropped crust in its mouth. The lamp in the flat above the post office goes on, then off, then on again, the way it does when someone is pacing and cannot decide whether to ring a number.

The peel Dad left me hangs on the hook above the bench, its handle capped with two pale bones crossed at the end. He bought it off a man in Margate who swore it came from a ship's galley. I polish those rounded ends on Sundays, and when the oven light catches them they look like they are watching me score the loaves.

By five the first trays go in and the glass fogs white, and for once the street is the thing that cannot see me. I wipe a clear circle with my sleeve. The fox is still there, sitting under the streetlamp, looking back up at the window as if it knows exactly who is awake.
