A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cook of the Harrowgate kept a rose in the flour bin. A cabin boy had drawn it in soot and lard on a square of brown paper, then folded the paper into three corners, and every voyage the cook took it out and set it on the shelf above the stove where the steam could reach it. Nobody asked why. A cook who has fed a crew through forty weeks of salt beef learns not to ask.

Off the Horn the wind went round and stayed there. The galley fire drowned in the third watch, the coal was wet, and the men came down blue-lipped asking for anything hot. Nan Alcott had one whale-oil lamp and a pot of cold water that would not boil. She took the paper down and unfolded its corners, and found the rose gone grey at the edges, the petals darker where the damp had got into them.

She did not burn it. She held the paper over the lamp and the flame leaned toward it, the way a dog turns its head at its own name. Then she set the pot on the lamp's brass chimney instead, and the water came up slow and sure, and the men drank it standing, and nobody said a word about the paper on the shelf.

At first light the sky over the bow was a triangle of clean blue between two black banks of cloud, and the cabin boy, grown now and stooped, stood at the rail pointing at it. Nan folded the paper back into its three corners and put it in her apron pocket. The flour stayed dry that voyage, and the rose stayed where it was, and she never once put it in the fire.
