The music box had stopped on the first frost, and by the time Orrin Vale reached Saltmarrow the whole lane was waiting on him. He set his case on the wheelwright's step, unscrewed the slim brass tube everyone called his key, and held it over the little cogs while they chirped like a startled wren. "Allons-y," he said to the box, the way other men spoke to horses, and the tune began again from the middle of a bar.

Nell Pardoe watched from the gate with her arms folded. The box had been her mother's, and it played the same lullaby every night until her mother went to the churchyard in March. Orrin knew the tune. He had heard it in four counties, always played on boxes with stars painted inside the lid, and always by children who had lost someone.

He worked until the lamps were low, and when he finally shut the lid the tune came out thinner than before, as if it had walked a long way to reach them. "It will be a little different now," he said. "It keeps its own time, and it learns the room it's in."

Nell wound it at dawn and listened with her eyes closed. The notes came out of order, then settled into a new shape, one she had never heard. Orrin was already on the road, and he did not look back, because a mender who looks back always ends up staying.
