The greenhouse glass came down in the night, the way it does every March when the wind gets under the panes, and I spent the morning on my knees picking it out of the runner beans. Your grandad's screwdriver was still in the shed drawer where he left it, the one with the little stars he scratched into the handle with a nail. I used it on the hinge of the door, and it hummed the way it always did, as if it had opinions about the hinge. I think he'd have laughed at me for talking to it.

He said allons-y every time we set off on the Sunday walk, usually before I'd got my boots laced, and he'd be out of the gate waving his hat like the whole row of allotments was a train he'd been waiting for. You'll remember that. You used to copy him in the back of the car with your fists in the air.

Now you're off to Leeds with your boxes and your habit of taking the long way round, and I want you to have this. Don't bother sending it back. Keep it in the glovebox with the map nobody reads. Next time something gives way on you, a shelf or a bike or a heart, take it out, give it a turn, and say the word out loud. Then go and fix the thing.
