Always lettering with colour splashes on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo spells the word Always in bold black letters with a slanted, gothic-influenced form, set across the inner wrist. Behind the lettering, soft blue, green, orange and red splashes fade outwards, and small black stars sit at both ends of the word. The photo is taken straight on at close range, with the palm visible above and plain skin below.

Dear Tomas,

The roof of the east tower came down in the March gales, so I have moved my paints into the old chapel, where the wind only gets in through the window slits. Mrs Ferris from the village brings bread up on Thursdays and tells me I am mad to sit out here with the jackdaws, but she has never seen the light come through the broken arch at dusk. It turns the stone the colour of a bruised plum, and then, for about a quarter of an hour, everything goes gold.
I have been trying to paint the word the steward carved over the gate before the lightning took the lintel, the one that means for ever. I could never get the letters to sit straight. They came out leaning like men walking into rain, so in the end I stopped fighting them and let the colour do as it pleased. Blue from the sea I can see from the window, green from the moss on the steps, orange from the bracken that burned last autumn, red from the cart you painted the spring you left. They spill past the letters and do not stop where I tell them to.
I put stars at either end because the old watch used to keep their hours by them, and because the steward swore that anything written with enough ink would outlast the walls. I am not certain he was right about that. The walls are mostly gone now.
Come home by the spring tide if you can. The gate still stands, and I have left the space above it bare for your name.
