The drummer at the Brackwater Pavilion had worn through eleven pairs of sticks by the first Tuesday of the season, and Mrs Pargeter had started setting a tin bucket beside the kit to catch the splinters. The bass drum walked a foot across the boards every time he kicked it. The piano player, a thin man called Fenwick who had played through two wars and one flood, took to sitting behind a screen. The stage manager swore the cymbals had started sounding out of tune just to get away from him. On the last night of August the wind turned north and the whole coast went quiet in the way it does before weather, and at ten past nine the lights failed across the front and the hall went black.

Ossie did not stop. Mrs Pargeter heard him through the dark, a rattle on the tin bucket, then a slap on the rim of the snare, then something that might have been the sea itself keeping step. Fenwick said later that the waves outside had started to land on the beat, one after another, the whole length of the shingle. When the generator caught and the lamps came back, Ossie was sitting in the middle of the stage with the bucket between his knees, sticks crossed over his chest, grinning through his cracked glasses. The splinters were all in the bucket. Not one had reached the floor.
