Colourful puppet band tattoo on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows three puppet-style characters stacked vertically down the lower leg, including a red furry drummer, a figure playing a saxophone or trombone, and a character at the bottom with a keyboard. The linework is bold with smooth, painted-looking shading, and the palette includes bright reds, yellows, blues, greens and pinks. The design fills a narrow vertical strip of the calf against a plain carpeted background.

The van broke down at the edge of Hollin Wood on the Tuesday, which Gideon said was a sign and I said was a wheel. We had four puppets, one trombone with no slide, and a keyboard that only played when you kicked the case. The village of Lesser Ashby was a mile off through the trees, and its hall had already paid us for a Saturday matinee we could no longer reach on foot.

Bartholomew Bongo, our shaggy red drummer with a voice like a rusted gate, insisted on walking ahead. He came back twenty minutes later holding the hand of a girl of about nine. She said the wood had a band of its own, that they played after dark between the oaks, and that the village had stopped listening to them years ago because they were too loud.
We went. Gideon kept one hand up his sleeve, which is how you hold a puppet who is about to sulk. In a clearing there was a fallen log for a stage, and on it three figures in rags of moss sat tuning instruments made from hollowed gourds and bent tin. The yellow horn with a face honked a note and the whole wood leaned towards it. Blue Mister Pinch pushed his spectacles up his nose and nodded at me as if we had an appointment.
We played until the moon was high. Nobody in Lesser Ashby believed us when we turned up at dawn, van fixed, trousers muddy, but the hall took our tickets anyway. The girl sat in the front row with her mother, and the orange one in the bowler hat, who never once let go of his keyboard, winked at her. I still don't know whether we were the ones who got the tune.
