The pig had been grinning down at the quay for thirty-one years before anybody thought to ask what he found so funny. Uncle Terry painted him on the chip shop shutter the summer the council refused us a new fryer, and he never once looked worried, which Mum said was the only sensible thing anyone had done on that harbour since the lifeboat was sold.

Every Saturday, Mr Pascoe came up from the slipway, squinted at the lettering arching over the pig's head and read it aloud as if it were scripture. BACON IS MEAT CANDY. "Your uncle had a way with words," he'd say, then order a bacon barm with brown sauce and tell me the same story about the mackerel boat that sank in a sea of tinned peaches. I never once asked whether any of it was true. Mr Pascoe had a face like a cracked jug and a laugh that rattled the cutlery.

The trouble started on a Tuesday in August, when a herring gull the whole quay called Admiral stole the last rasher straight off the griddle. He flew up in a wobbling loop, bacon dangling from his beak like a sausage on a string, and perched right beneath the painted halo. I swear the pig grinned wider. Mr Pascoe laughed until he had to sit on an upturned crate, and the gull dropped the rasher on the pavement, where a dog finished it.

At dusk I lock up under the sodium lamp, and the yellow halo catches the light, its little stars glinting like a crown somebody has forgotten to take off. The pig keeps smiling at the empty quay. I used to think he was mocking us. Now I think he's just the only one who knows how the joke ends.
